Historic Franklin Homes

The history of Franklin did not begin with the Civil War. For a half century before the war, Franklin was the county seat of Williamson County, probably the wealthiest county in Tennessee with Franklin as the center of a thriving plantation economy. The city of Franklin had been founded on October 26, 1799. Dr. Hugh Williamson, a member of the Continental Congress and for whom Williamson County was named, was a close personal friend of Ben Franklin. He was instrumental in the naming process.

Our city was well named. Ben Franklin was one of the most popular Americans in the young nation at the time. As a printer at a young age, he published his own newspaper and wrote most of the news stories and columns alone. Later, he published “Poor Richard's Almanac.” Many of his famous phrases such as “a penny saved is a penny earned” first appeared in that publication. As an inventor, he was always looking for ways to improve quality of life. He had poor vision so he invented bifocal glasses. His brother had kidney problems so Ben invented a flexible urinary catheter. He figured out a way to divide the hold of a sailing ship into multiple watertight compartments so if a ship developed a leak, it would not sink.
